Beyond our solar system: palmtop version

The Milky Way galaxy suspended in a glass cube

Introducing a new, smaller version of the ‘Beyond our solar system’ galaxy in a glass cube made with the aid of 80,000 pieces of star data.

(‘Beyond our solar system’ is a three-dimensional laser-etched rendering of stars in a cube of high-grade transparent optical glass, based on the latest data from Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory. The etching is performed in Japan. See information on the larger version for more detail.)

At the request of the non-profit organization Green Valley Inc. as a part of their community-building efforts for the town of Kamiyama, Tokushima on the island of Shikoku, we created the ‘in Kamaiyama’ website, linking a small mountain village to the world.

EARTH CLOCK in LakeTown

Earth Clock

LakeTown (Koshigaya, 2008)

A new edition of EARTH CLOCK (Kobe Airport 2006).
In October 2008, two clock towers were set in one of the atriums of Aeon Lake Town in Koshigaya. (Aeon Lake Town is Japan’s largest shopping center).

The clock on the left expresses time in hours and minutes. The one on the right reflects natural time: Sun’s shadow as it appears in real time on a slowly rotating three-dimensional rendition of Earth.

A laser was used to etch around 80,000 of the stars in the Milky Way, using three-dimensional data from the Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory.
